Song Starting Workshop with Severin Browne
Severin leads a workshop for songwriters and songwriting students that allows each participant to get in touch with an original idea and develop it. Through a series of exercises, the songwriter finds a memory or feeling that may be connected with a personal story. These early ideas are not to be shared with the group, but developed individually by the participant into a lyric.
Originally developed for songwriters to find new ideas, Severin has added some basic songwriting principles to make it a workshop for both beginners and long-time songwriters looking for inspiration.
The cost is just $40 per person.
Each attendee should bring:
1. his or her own instrument for the musical part of the workshop (pianists should bring an electronic keyboard with headset),
2. a small handheld tape recorder to record the musical ideas that are bound to happen, and
3. lots of paper and a good pen or two.
Because the workshop is only four hours long, not everybody will leave with a completed song. But so far, every participant has left the workshop with a beginning that is original, because it came from inside. |
