Songwriting Organizations
The Songwriters Guild of America, LA
The SGA will look over a single song contract and let you know what you are signing before you sign it. The Guild has lower rates for all Guild members on all SGA classes. Plus there are free events that are available to SGA members only (ASK-A-PRO, networking parties, etc.). Their main purpose is to collect mechanical royalties for it's members under the basic Royalties Collection Plan.
Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI)
Established in 1967, the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) is the world’s largest not-for-profit songwriter’s trade organization dedicated to serving songwriters of all genres of music. We are your advocate and we help you meet your dreams. For serious, aspiring songwriters, NSAI operates workshops in over 100 cities throughout the U.S. and three other countries to help you further your craft and understanding of the music business. Throughout the year, NSAI presents several educational retreats, from our Songwriter’s Symposium including small group song evaluations with Music Row publishers, to our Song Camps program featuring one-on-one evaluations with award-winning, professional songwriters. What’s more, our unique Song Evaluation Service provides NSAI members the opportunity to send in songs for verbal critiques from professional, published songwriters – a service unparalleled in feedback and value! For professional songwriters, NSAI serves as your advocate to protect your pocketbook. In recent months, we have successfully argued a case before the U.S. Supreme Court keeping an additional 20 years on the term of your copyrights and we have helped to stop a compulsory license bill saving millions in songwriter royalties. Presently, NSAI is working to change antiquated tax laws that unfairly impact songwriter’s income. In addition, through NSAI’s ongoing ProSeries events, we provide information ranging from health insurance for songwriters to recapturing your copyrights; plus, we create song pitching and networking opportunities by regularly hosting A&R staffs of record labels. "It all begins with a song.
